What is the difference between on-page and off-page SEO?

What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?


Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the heart of digitalmarketing. It is the process of getting an increasing quality and quantity of the traffic onto your web pages through organic search engine results. This traffic can be converted into customers using good SEO techniques. Before following different SEO techniques you must understand the types of SEO and their differences. If you are digital marketers you might have come across the terms On-page SEO and Off-page SEO.

On-page or Onsite SEO is a term which refers to the practice of SEO that includes both content and HTML source code whereas off-page SEO includes link building and other external sources. Let us study their differences in detail.


What is the difference between on-page and off-page SEO?

Some of the key points which differ on-page off-page SEO are discussed below-

On-page SEO:

  • Keyword and content optimization: When a keyword has been searched it is used to optimize the content i.e. properly adding keywords. Keyword should be added in all the content of the website but you should avoid keyword stuffing. You should not add any irrelevant keyword which doesn’t suit the topic of your site.
  • Optimizing HTML source code: There are many other ways to optimize the HTML code. To acquire this task first of all title must have the keyword in it and should be between 50-60 characters. The meta description should be 160 characters long and all the relevant keyword should be added in meta name keyword section. H1 tag should also include keywords.
  • Duplicate content monitoring: This is very important that your web pages should be plagiarism-free. For this many online tools are available to check plagiarized content. If your website has plagiarized content then the web browser will not rank your website.
  • Site architecture and coding: The code of your website should not be very lengthy i.e. complexity should not be high.
  • Site speed: In On-page SEO monitoring site speed is very important as it will help to improve the time taken by your website to load in one’s PC or mobile. Optimizing images, minifying code, leverage browser caching, and reducing redirects are some of the processes to maximize speed. 
  • Site Uptime: It is the time in which your website and web service are available to the users over a given period. This must also be monitored with online tools available.


Off-page SEO

  • Keyword research: Keyword researching is the process of getting words which are most commonly searched in search engines. Many online tools are available for keyword research and one such is Google keyword planner. This tool will help you to find commonly used keywords, its competition, biding rate, and average traffic.
  • Link building: It is the process of getting other websites to link back to your website. Link building is one of the major concerns to drive referral traffic and increase their site's authority. It usually happens sites with more backlinks tend to earn higher rankings.
  • Blog and Articles: Blogging is good for SEO because it helps with several things that are important ranking factors. It makes your website fresh. Through attractive blogs, people will spend more time on your website and your users might convert into customers.
  • Deep linking: It refers to including of hyperlinks within content that will direct users to site’s page whenever user clicks on it. Deep linking can help businesses improve web conversions.
  • Social Optimization: Social media optimization (SMO) is the use of online communities to generate publicity to increase the awareness of a product, service or event. Types of social media involved include Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, bookmarking sites, video sharing sites, blogging sites, etc.
